The Hawaii Emergency Management and Hawaii County Civil Defense agencies will conduct siren testing on Thursday at Naalehu Elementary School in Ka‘u, Hawaiian Paradise Park in Puna and Carvalho Park in Hilo. The sirens will be tested between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., according to the agencies.
Residents nearby may hear the siren sound for 30-seconds to 3-minute intervals during the identified timeframe. Testing will include short blasts known as “burps.” During the tests, officials and technicians will be checking the functionality of the sirens.
HI-EMA encourages the public to make use of other supplemental methods of warning including, but not limited to, signing up for the County of Hawaii Civil Defense mass emergency notification system and utilizing NOAA Weather Radio.
Residents with concerns about the sirens or their operations, or with reports of siren malfunctions, may contact Hawaii County Civil Defense at (808) 935-0031.
